Living in a coastal town – and in our case, on an actual island – the saying “Spring has sprung” looks a little different to us. The traditional signs of spring seen in most places don’t always apply here. We can have a gorgeous 60-degree day followed by a week of gloomy skies and frigid temps. Our spring flowers bloom a month later than they would a mere 20 miles inland, and the cold wind coming off the water has us reaching for our puffers when most people put them in storage months ago.  

Spring to us is the people trickling back to town to open their vacation homes in anticipation for the season. It is the boat owners readying their boats for splashdown. Gardeners sifting through their perennials anxious to see which ones survived the winter. It is the hometown haunts hanging their “help wanted” signs. Families adopting new pups, anticipating the longer days and warmer weather ahead. The Tavern readying itself for the busy season, with brand new window screens and freshly planted pansies filling its window boxes. It is those random but beautiful days at The Black Dog Wharf, when the wind blows from the southwest, that tricks us into getting our summer clothes ready for another memorable season.
